Job title:  Embedded Development Engineer | Biomedical Engineering

Locations: Pretoria

A vacancy is available for an Embedded Development Engineer with expertise in firmware development, hardware design, and embedded software engineering.

You will play a key role within a Medical Device Technologies R&D Team, building the embedded systems and electronics that power FDA-approved, life-saving technologies.

About the Role:

This is a role for a technically strong individual in firmware, hardware, and embedded systems engineering who is a curious, mission-driven engineer thriving in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced environment and seeking to have their work directly impact patient outcomes worldwide.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop firmware for bare-metal C++ applications (e.g., Silicon Labs chips) and embedded Linux platforms.
  • Perform schematic design, PCB layout, and prototype testing.
  • Translate user requirements into clinical and technical specifications.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for designs, test plans, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, regulatory, manufacturing, and clinical partners.
  • Work with contractors, suppliers, and integration partners to ensure product success.
  • Investigate real-world device faults and assist with customer support and issue resolution.
  • Conduct site visits, including in clinical theatres, and work directly with anaesthesiologists and end-users.
  • Drive innovation and contribute to continuously improving product design and manufacturing workflows.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B ENG) in Electronic, Electrical, Computer, Biomedical or Mechatronic Engineering.
  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in embedded systems, firmware, and electronics design.

Core Technical Skills:

  • Embedded C/C++ development (bare-metal and RTOS).
  • Embedded Linux development and system-level debugging.
  • Strong understanding of analogue and digital circuit design.
  • PCB schematic capture and layout.
  • Hardware debugging using oscilloscopes and other lab equipment.
  • Working knowledge of UART, SPI, I2C, TCP/IP, and Bluetooth protocols.
  • Experience with version control systems (GIT).

Additional Experience (Bonus / Advantageous):

  • Master’s degree in Electronic or Electrical Engineering, particularly with a focus on embedded systems, signal processing, or medical device technology.
  • Design for manufacturability (DFM) and optimising production workflows.
  • Working with suppliers and contractors throughout the development cycle.
  • Familiarity with medical device standards and regulatory frameworks: ISO 13485, CE, FDA, ISO 14971.
  • Experience in customer-facing and clinical environments.
  • Creative problem-solving and fault investigation under real-world conditions.
  • Experience with Rust programming for embedded systems (advantageous).
