| Purpose of the Role:
The DevOps and Linux Automation Engineer own the reliability, automation, and continuous delivery infrastructure that keeps our client’s cybersecurity platforms running at scale. This is not a traditional sysadmin role, it suits a developer-minded engineer who is energised by automation, infrastructure-as-code, and eliminating manual processes.
This role requires an individual who brings deep Linux expertise, strong scripting and tooling capability, and a DevOps mindset to design and maintain the CI/CD pipelines, configuration management frameworks, and infrastructure automation that underpin the company’s 24/7 operational environment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Certification
- Relevant undergraduate degree at NQF Level 7 in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent.
- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), or Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) required or strongly advantageous.
- Ansible, Terraform, or cloud platform certifications (AWS, Azure) advantageous.
Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on Linux systems experience in a professional environment.
- Demonstrable DevOps or automation engineering experience. CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and configuration management in production.
- Strong scripting capability in Bash, Python, or similar for systems automation and tooling development.
- Experience with Ansible for configuration management and Terraform for infrastructure provisioning.
Technical Skills
- Deep expertise in Red Hat/CentOS/AlmaLinux system administration and KVM virtualisation.
- Solid networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, firewalling, and VPN configuration.
- Cloud infrastructure proficiency across Azure and/or AWS.
- Git-based version control and collaborative development workflows.
Advantageous
- Exposure to a customer-facing or managed services environment.
- Experience with Docker/Podman containerisation and Kubernetes orchestration.
- Background in or affinity for cybersecurity infrastructure and Linux environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Automation & Infrastructure-as-Code
- Design, build, and maintain automation frameworks using Ansible, Terraform, and related tooling to manage infrastructure at scale.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines that enable reliable, repeatable, and fast delivery of software and infrastructure changes.
- Eliminate manual operational processes through scripting, workflow automation, and intelligent tooling, if it’s done twice, it should be automated.
- Own configuration management across Linux environments, ensuring consistency, auditability, and rapid recovery capability.
Linux Systems Engineering
- Install, configure, maintain, and optimise CentOS, Red Hat, and AlmaLinux environments across on-premise and cloud infrastructure.
- Manage KVM-based virtualisation and related hypervisor technologies in production environments.
- Perform system maintenance including software updates, log analysis, performance tuning, and capacity management.
- Support 24/7 infrastructure availability. Respond to incidents outside standard hours as required; valid driver’s licence and own transport essential for client site visits.
Cloud & Containerisation
- Manage and optimise cloud infrastructure across Azure and AWS, including provisioning, cost management, and security.
- Build and maintain containerised workloads using Docker and Podman; exposure to Kubernetes advantageous.
- Contribute to cloud-native architecture decisions and infrastructure migration initiatives.
Collaboration & Documentation
- Collaborate with software engineering, security operations, and product teams to align infrastructure delivery with platform requirements.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date technical documentation for all systems, runbooks, and automation frameworks.
- Assist and guide clients with OS and software installations, configurations, and on-site server deployments where required.
