Job title:  Software Engineer – Data Analytics

Location: Stellenbosch
Our client is building their next-generation workstation for intelligence production, analysis and collaboration. It is used by intelligence and law enforcement analysts worldwide. It relies on access to all the organisation’s data from a large-scale collection system. That’s where you come in.

The company’s platforms are built from the ground up to handle everything from small to petabyte-scale data volumes. Using intuitive, modern web-based interfaces and the latest web technologies, our client streamlines complex processing and makes sense of even the most diverse data types. Their reliable solutions continue to evolve with the demands of their clients and the rapidly changing technology landscape.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, or Computer Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in a data-focused software engineering role.
  • Strong programming skills in Java, with a solid understanding of software engineering principles and best practices.
  • Proficient in database design and querying, including experience with SQL and working with large datasets.
  • Experience with version control systems, microservice-based architectures, and CI/CD pipelines.

Advantageous skills and experience:

  • Experience building and composing queries on various back-ends.
  • Experience working with real-time or event processing systems, such as Apache Kafka.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and scalability challenges in big data environments.
  • A background in signal processing, telecommunications, or IP networks will be hugely advantageous.

Job overview:

  • Build ETL and query services that serve data to the new workstation front-end.
  • Implement comprehensive unit tests for correctness and performance.
  • Become a subject matter expert in the data we work with and the intelligence analysis domain.
  • Exploit industry leading data-warehouse technology to serve data to the front-end fast and compute various analytics on the data.
  • Collaborate with suppliers of data to ensure that your team gets the right data and in the right way to serve the end-user.
  • Collaborate with API consumers to design API’s that serve their needs.
  • Contribute to the data architecture.
  • Maintain and improve the continuous integration process.
  • Contribute to micro-services architecture to ensure clean interfaces.
  • Build, release and deploy services in production.
