We are recruiting a Technical Lead | Senior Software Engineer to head the software team and drive development within the company’s core R&D division in Pretoria.

About the Role:

This is a high-impact leadership position in which you will guide software architecture and manage the engineers who develop products. Reporting to R&D leadership, you will oversee a team, including firmware and software engineers, and take ownership of the software product lifecycle from inception to commercial release.

We’re looking for a versatile, systems thinker who is comfortable reviewing embedded C++ architecture as well as discussing AWS cloud environments, mobile application development, and system-wide design documents.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronic, Electrical, Biomedical, or Computer Engineering.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, demonstrating success in transforming complex products from initial concept to launch.
  • Having experience or a strong interest in leading technical teams and effectively managing engineering workflows can be a great asset.
  • Experience operating within a highly regulated industry (e.g., aerospace, Biomedical engineering, medical devices, or automotive).
  • Strong technical proficiency in a mix of our core stack: C++ (embedded), JavaScript/Node.js, Python, Rust, C#, and Bash.
  • Demonstrated experience with AWS cloud environments and general application development.
  • Strong system design skills with a history of documenting and reviewing complex architectures.

Highly advantageous but not essential:

  • A Master’s degree or a multi-disciplinary academic background (e.g., combining Electrical and Biomedical Engineering).
  • Experience with Embedded Linux (e.g., Yocto Project).
  • Experience with mobile application frameworks such as React Native.
  • Deep knowledge of medical device software compliance and FDA software submission requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage a team of software and firmware engineers, guiding their technical output and fostering a culture of engineering excellence.
  • System Architecture: Drive the system design across our entire technology stack, ensuring seamless integration between embedded device firmware, mobile applications, and cloud environments.
  • Engineering Quality: Conduct rigorous reviews of system designs, architecture documents, and pull requests to ensure performance, security, and scalability.
  • Full Lifecycle Ownership: Take complex software and connected medical products through concept, specification, prototyping, validation, production, and post-market improvement.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all software design and architecture adheres to rigorous standards and cyber risk assessment protocols.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with hardware engineering and R&D leadership to align software capabilities with hardware co-design goals.

You’ll have opportunities to work closely with clients in the medical tech field and see your work in action. This is a chance to contribute meaningfully from concept to commercialisation.
