Job Description
Job title:  Electrical Engineer | Protection & Control

Location: Centurion (On-site)

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Electrical Engineer with a strong focus on substation protection and control plant. The successful candidate will work as a consulting engineer and play a key role in the planning, designing and specifying protection, control and automation systems within high-voltage substations.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with ECSA (advantageous).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical engineering, specifically protection and control within high-voltage substations.
  • Proven expertise in protection and control plant, including but not limited to the following:
    • Protection and control scheme design.
    • Metering scheme design.
    • Integration of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).
  • Proven experience in:
    • Fault studies and protection setting calculations.
    • Fault analysis and reporting.
    • Substation automation system design.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Solid understanding of substation protection and control systems.
  • Familiar with industry standards and utility specifications.
  • Proficient in relevant design and simulation tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, DIgSILENT, ETAP, etc.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and coordination abilities.
  • Strong report writing skills.
  • Attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and/or review technical specifications and drawings for substation control and protection systems at MV, HV and EHV levels.
  • Design and implement protection and control schemes, from concept design, to detail design (including protection and control scheme schematic drawings), to supervising implementation and commissioning.
  • Participate in system studies, fault analysis and protection settings.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable international standards (e.g., IEC, SANS, NRS), utility/client standards and employer’s requirements as well as project specific standards and specifications.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, clients, and contractors during project planning and execution.
  • Provide technical input during the procurement of control and protection equipment.
  • Witness Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning of protection and control plant systems.
  • Support maintenance and troubleshooting activities in operational substations.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and as-built records.
